Latest Field Notes
Fresh intel from the digging grounds.
Hi, I'm Piotr.
It started with my grandfather in the muddy fields of Scotland. I was just a kid, but the thrill of pulling history out of the ground hooked me for life.
15 years later, I'm still chasing that first Roman coin (Scotland is stingy with the Romans!), but I've found something else: a love for helping others get into this hobby.
I built Iron & Dirt because I hate clickbait reviews. I want to share real, honest experiences—the good signals, the trash, and the rain.

Common Questions
New to the hobby? Here are the answers to the questions we get asked the most.
Is metal detecting legal everywhere?
No! Laws vary wildly. In the UK, you generally need the landowner's permission. On public land (beaches, parks), local council bylaws apply. In the US, federal/state lands have strict rules. Always check local laws before digging, or you might lose your gear and get fined.
How deep can a metal detector go?
It depends on the target size and soil conditions. A typical coin might be detected at 6-10 inches (15-25cm). Large hoards or masses of metal can be detected much deeper, sometimes feet down. Don't believe marketing hype promising meters of depth for coins!
Do I need a license to metal detect?
In the UK, you don't need a license for the detector itself, but you need a license from the Crown Estate for some foreshores (it's free!). In other countries, permits might be required for specific areas. 'The Thames License' is needed for the river Thames in London.
What happens if I find treasure?
In the UK, you MUST follow the Treasure Act 1996. If you find gold, silver (over 300 years old), or groups of coins, you must report it to the Coroner within 14 days. Failure to do so is a criminal offense. In the US, laws differ by state and land ownership.
Can I use my detector in the rain?
Most search coils are waterproof, but the control box (the bit with the screen) might not be. Check your model's IP rating. Fully waterproof machines like the Nokta Legend or Minelab Equinox can be submerged; others need a rain cover.
What is the best metal detector for beginners?
We recommend the Nokta Simplex or Minelab Vanquish series. They offer incredible performance, are easy to learn, and won't break the bank. Avoid cheap 'toy' detectors from generic marketplaces; they will only frustrate you.
What is 'discrimination'?
Discrimination allows you to ignore certain metals, like iron (nails, foil). It helps you focus on 'good' targets like coins and jewellery. However, using too much discrimination can mask good targets that are deep or next to iron.
What else do I need besides the detector?
A good shovel (spade), a 'pinpointer' (handheld mini-detector to find the item in the hole), sturdy boots, and a finds pouch. Headphones are highly recommended to hear faint signals and save battery life.
Can I find gold with a regular detector?
Yes, gold rings and jewellery are picked up by most detectors. However, finding tiny natural gold nuggets usually requires a specialized high-frequency machine designed for gold prospecting.
How do I get permission to detect on a farm?
Ask politely! Knock on the door or write a letter to the farmer. Be respectful, offer to show them what you find, and promise to fill in your holes and remove trash. Joining a metal detecting club is also a great way to get access to land.
